The start of this week was incredibly hot for us in the UK! We have had a five day heatwave where we saw temperatures over 30C. On Wednesday we had the hottest June day in 41 years!! The highest temperature recorded was 34.5C. That is super hot for english weather in June but as i was finding this heat unbearable it gave me a good idea of what to write about this week for my blog 🙂 Sun exposure.
During the sizzling summer months you probably hear everywhere about applying sunscream and for good reason. Most of us already know that the sun’s rays lead to burning which can lead to skin damage and as a result skin cancer can occur which is a major reason why we should be protecting our skin from sun exposure but, a little bit of sun has benefits for us and our health so the best thing to think when you think of sun exposure is to stay safe and enjoy the sun’s powerful rays moderation is key.
Sun Exposure – What’s the good?
The best benefit during sun exposure is that it helps us produce Vitamin D. And what’s even more amazing is that you only need 10-15 minutes of sun exposure four times a week to get your daily requirement of Vitamin D. This only works though for bodies that are suncream free and works best when as much skin as possible is showing and soaking up those rays. Vitamin D isn’t found in a lot of food sources but it plays an important role in helping us to feel good and at our best. There are many benefits and these include;
- When your body has the daily requirement of Vitamin D then it has been found to prevent depression.
- Vitamin D also helps our bodies absorb calcium so it is great for strong bones and healthy teeth.
- Vitamin D has been suggested to have a protective effect against some conditions/ diseases like; cancer, type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis
- Natural light also seems to have a big role in preventing insomnia and getting your circadian rhythms back on track. Circadian Rhythms basically tell you when to wake up and when to go to sleep. Our bodies function better when they are back on track. So if you work indoors or spend your days inside then your circadian rhythms maybe off which causes you to be wide awake at say 1am. But going out in natural light during the day for 30 to 60 minutes may be a fix for your restless nights. There have been studies proven to show that natural light helps this.
Sun Exposure – What’s the bad?
If you love to soak up the rays for long periods during the summer with no stylish sunglasses on overtime this may effect your delicate eyes! Prevention is key when you are young for alot of things and this is definitely one of them. Sun exposure without wearing protective UVA/UVB coating can cause cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and other potentially blinding disorders. So whilst suncream is talked about alot please don’t forgot the importance of your fashionable shades. You will be grateful in your 50’s and 60’s for sunglasses.
Another bad point from unsafe sun exposure is that it can cause headaches, dehydration and heat exhaustion. It is so so so important to stay hydrated and topped up with water every single day as it has so many benefits and after all our bodies are made up from roughly 60-75% of water but it is even more important to drink more during hot weather. Because i know the importance of water for a healthy lifestyle and body I have this water rule haha, It is – Do not let yourself feel thirsty before you pour yourself a glass of chilled water because it is possible that you’re already slightly dehydrated then. Instead take sips throughout the day to ensure you give your body what it needs.
Sun Exposure – What’s the ugly?
I think it’s safe to say that most of us want to age gracefully and alot of us would like to prevent wrinkles from appearing… i guess that from all the anit-ageing products on the market (you know all the magic in a bottle stuff.) Whilst some of these products actually do contain antioxidants for helping to prevent wrinkles it won’t cause wrinkles to never come or to vanish from your skin sadly. But there is another way that is free to prevent them also because wrinkles are not just from ageing, oh yes you guessed it they are from sun exposure too. This is where “prevention is key” appears again. Over doing your time in the sun is the most common cause of skin wrinkling and damage. The UV rays are the reason for wrinkles, sun spots, less skin elasticity and other skin ageing signs. This is also why you should be applying your sun cream daily, any suncream would always be better to apply than non at all but try and look for one with a higher SPF as this will help to block out more rays. Lastly, do some research yourself on the best suncreams on the market and ones that do have what they claim to have on their packaging.
I hope this post was helpful in some way to you especially as it was officially the first day of summer on Wednesday 21st. Overall my main tips to staying safe during sun exposure is; To get your Vitamin D first soaking up the rays for 10-15 minutes but then slap on that sun cream daily, put on those stylish shades (that will also give you summer vibes), wear a hat if you will be outside for a long period of time, stay in the shade whenever possible, keep hydrated and try to avoid being outdoors when the sun’s rays are strongest roughly between 10am – 4pm (most say between 11am – 3pm.) Your skin and body will thank you for keeping safe during the summer months now and in the future, and you can still go out and enjoy the sunshine 🙂
