2020 was a very hard year for many of us due to the global pandemic that spread and even this year will still have it’s uncertainties and hard times up ahead. I have found that when it all gets abit too much I personally turn to wisdom and comforting tips/advice to help me regain balance again and find abit of peace from the storm. And as many of us are still living in difficult and uncertain times then I would love to share with you four of my favourite suggestions that will hopefully help you to regain balance when feeling overwhelmed.
- Remind Yourself That It Will Pass – My favourite suggestion when going through a tough time is to remind yourself that whatever you’re going through is temporary and it will pass. Think back to past hard and difficult periods in your life… they all passed didn’t they, so remember to tell yourself that this too shall pass. Try to avoid seeing the tough time as a forever state as that will cause you to think irrationally. A couple of my favourite quotes that is relevant to this suggestion are…
“You can’t calm the storm, so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself. The storm will pass.”
“The sun always shines after the storm.”
“This too shall pass… It takes a strong soul with real heart to develop smiles out of situations that make us weep. No matter how long it takes, it will get better. Keep going. Tough situations build strong people in the end.”
- Take Care Of Yourself – During tough times it’s also important to take care of yourself and avoid falling into victimhood. Everyone of us has choices about how we can move our life forward. One key thing to remember is that you can choose to take responsibility for your own happiness… there’s not much point in waiting for someone else to make you feel better and one of the best ways to help yourself is to make it happen for yourself. I’m not saying support from others isn’t needed as I am a huge believer of reaching out to others for support and comfort as they say “A problem shared is a problem halved.” But what I am saying is that you can make a big impact yourself by focusing on your own wellbeing and happiness and make it a priority.
- Tune In To Your Feelings And Emotions – Many of us struggle with how to deal with unpleasant feelings and emotions like; anxiety, anger, worry, sadness etc… We have a tendency to run from the situation that triggered the emotions or we even try to block them out. Instead why not let the emotions you are feeling be your guide. Ask yourself… What is this feeling trying to tell me? This will take some practice but once you become more in tune with your feelings and emotions they can help to lead you back to your point of stability.
- Do Something YOU Enjoy – Every single day make some time for YOU and do something that you really enjoy. This will help to boost your feelings of happiness and at the same time it will give you a moment of distraction to whatever tough time you are going through. Maybe you enjoy reading, dancing, pampering yourself with a face mask, singing your heart out, painting, stargazing, a warm bubble bath, watching a movie, going for a walk etc… Whatever it is you enjoy do it and make sure you make time for abit of ‘me time’ every single day. Alot of people find that getting out and about in nature truly refreshing and soothing and I would highly recommend getting some fresh air each day as fresh air increases dopamine and oxytocin which are both essential for effective self-care.
